About this book
Orphaned Heidi is left with her gruff grandfather in his hut high in the Swiss Alps, and she thrives there among the goats and the meadows, with Peter the goatherd and his blind grandmother for friends. Then her aunt takes her to Frankfurt as a companion for Clara, a rich girl who cannot walk, and Heidi wastes away with longing for the mountains until a doctor sends her home. The second half brings Clara to the Alps, where mountain air and an act of jealousy by Peter lead to an unexpected recovery.
Context and significance
Johanna Spyri wrote Heidi in German in 1880 and 1881, and it became the best-known Swiss book in the world. Kara Shallenberg reads an early English translation alone, in a little under ten hours.
