À propos du livre

In England in 1194, while King Richard is held captive abroad and his brother John schemes for the throne, the young Saxon knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns in disguise from the crusade, disinherited by his father. The story moves from the great tournament at Ashby to the siege of a Norman castle, with Robin Hood's outlaws and a mysterious Black Knight among the attackers, and to the trial of Rebecca, a Jewish healer accused of witchcraft by the Templars, whose fate depends on a trial by combat.

Contexte et portée

Walter Scott published the novel in 1819; it created the popular picture of medieval England and, unusually for its time, made its most admirable character a persecuted Jewish woman. Eight LibriVox volunteers read it in about nineteen and a half hours.
