History of Julius Caesar

Jacob Abbott tells the life of Julius Caesar for young readers: his escape from Sulla's proscriptions, his capture by pirates, whom he later had put to death as he had promised them, his rise in the politics of Rome, the conquest of Gaul, the crossing of the Rubicon and the civil war with Pompey, his time in Egypt with Cleopatra, and his murder in the Senate on the Ides of March. Abbott explains how the Roman Republic worked and why it fell.

It belongs to Abbott's series of histories for children, like his Alexander the Great and Cleopatra in this library, and was first published in 1849. Cate Barratt reads it alone, in under five hours.
