About this book

Against his father's advice a young man from York goes to sea, survives a storm, is captured by pirates and enslaved, escapes, becomes a planter in Brazil, and is then shipwrecked, the only survivor, on an island off the coast of South America. Crusoe tells how he saves tools from the wreck, builds a fortified home, tames goats, grows corn and keeps a calendar on a post, and how, after years alone, he finds a man's footprint in the sand, rescues the prisoner he names Friday, and finally leaves the island after twenty-eight years.

Context and significance

Daniel Defoe published the book in 1719 as though it were a true memoir, drawing on the story of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, and it is often called the first English novel. Denny Sayers reads it alone, in about fourteen hours.
