When their father dies and their half-brother keeps the family estate, the Dashwood sisters and their mother move to a small cottage in Devon. Elinor, the elder, hides her feelings for the reserved Edward Ferrars behind good sense and self-command; Marianne, seventeen and romantic, gives her heart openly to the dashing Willoughby. The book follows the two sisters through love, disappointment, a secret engagement and a serious illness, as each learns something of the other's way.
Context and significance
Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen's first published novel, in 1811, and appeared simply as By a Lady. Elizabeth Klett reads it alone, in about eleven hours.
