Sobre o livro

In 1829 Washington Irving lodged in the empty palace of the Nasrid kings in Granada, and this book is the record of his months there. He describes the Court of Lions, the Tower of Comares and the halls by moonlight, the old woman and her niece who kept house for him, and the gossiping neighbours and old soldiers living in the ruins. Between these sketches he retells their legends, the Arabian astrologer, the three beautiful princesses, the Moor's legacy and Prince Ahmed al-Kamel who learns the language of birds, and the story of Boabdil, the last sultan of Granada.

Contexto e importância

Irving published the book in 1832 and revised it in 1851. It did more than any other to bring travellers to the Alhambra, and its picture of al-Andalus, romantic as it is, is written with real sympathy for the Moors. David Wales reads all thirty-three chapters, close to eleven hours in total.
