The Speech at the Stone 22:20 About this book Fyodor Karamazov, a coarse, greedy landowner, has three sons: Dmitri, a passionate army officer who quarrels with his father over money and over the same woman; Ivan, a cold intellectual who cannot accept a God who allows children to suffer; and Alyosha, the youngest, a novice under the saintly elder Zosima. When the father is murdered, Dmitri is arrested and tried, and the novel becomes both a detective story and a vast argument about faith, freedom and guilt, including Ivan's famous parable of the Grand Inquisitor.
