In the summer of 1922 Nick Carraway rents a small house on Long Island next to the mansion of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who throws enormous parties. Gatsby, it turns out, has built his whole fortune and himself to win back Daisy Buchanan, whom he loved years ago and who lives across the bay, married to the brutal, wealthy Tom. Nick watches the old romance revive and end in a car accident, a killing and Gatsby's lonely funeral, the American dream turned to ashes.
