A great yellow diamond, taken from a Hindu shrine and seized by an English officer at the storming of Seringapatam in 1799, is left as a birthday gift to the young Rachel Verinder, and disappears from her room that same night. Three mysterious Indians watch the house, the famous Sergeant Cuff investigates, and the truth emerges through the accounts of several narrators, from the old house-steward Gabriel Betteredge, who consults Robinson Crusoe for every problem, to a pious, meddling cousin.
Context and significance
Wilkie Collins published the novel in 1868, and T. S. Eliot called it the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels. Eight LibriVox volunteers read it in about twenty hours.
