About this book

On a summer afternoon at the Red House, where the vain Mark Ablett entertains guests, his long-lost brother Robert arrives from Australia and is shot dead in a locked office, and Mark disappears. Antony Gillingham, a young man of independent means who happens to call at that moment, decides to play detective with his cheerful friend Bill Beverley as his Watson, and the two explore secret passages, a pond and the lies of the household.

Context and significance

A. A. Milne, later the author of Winnie-the-Pooh, published this, his only detective novel, in 1922; it is light, witty and fair to the reader. Kristin Hughes reads it alone, in about seven hours.
