Walking home across Hampstead Heath at night, the young drawing master Walter Hartright meets a woman dressed all in white who has escaped from an asylum. Soon afterwards he falls in love with his pupil, Laura Fairlie, who looks strangely like her, but Laura is promised to Sir Percival Glyde, and with his smiling, sinister friend Count Fosco he plots to seize her fortune. Laura's clever half-sister, Marian Halcombe, fights back, and the story is told, as in a court case, by many witnesses.
Context and significance
Published as a serial in 1859 and 1860, the novel was a sensation and helped invent the mystery thriller; Count Fosco is one of the great villains of English fiction. Thirteen LibriVox volunteers read it in about twenty-five and a half hours.
