Eleven of Poe's tales of terror and his most famous poem. A murderer hears his victim's heart beating under the floorboards in The Tell-Tale Heart, a man walls up his wife, and his cat with her, in The Black Cat, the house of Usher cracks and sinks into its dark lake, Prince Prospero's masked ball is visited by the Red Death, Montresor leads his enemy down into the wine vaults in The Cask of Amontillado, and a prisoner of the Inquisition watches a blade swing lower in The Pit and the Pendulum. The Raven is read among them.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) wrote these stories in the 1830s and 1840s, mostly for magazines, and they shaped both the modern horror story and the short story itself. Eleven LibriVox volunteers read them in about five hours.
