Sobre el autor

Qasim Amin (1863–1908) was an Egyptian judge who studied law in France and returned convinced that his country's progress depended on the education and freedom of women. His book The Liberation of Women (1899) argued for girls' education and against the seclusion of women, and caused one of the great debates of modern Arab thought.

He answered his critics the following year with The New Woman, and he was among the founders of the Egyptian University, the forerunner of Cairo University. He died at forty-five, but his books are still discussed wherever women's rights are debated in the Arab world.
