About the author

Muhyi al-Din ibn Arabi (1165–1240), known as the Greatest Master, was born in Murcia in al-Andalus. As a young man he met the philosopher Ibn Rushd in Córdoba, and then followed the Sufi path across North Africa and the East, to Mecca, where he began his vast Meccan Revelations, and finally to Damascus, where he died.

His books, above all The Bezels of Wisdom, made him the most influential and most debated mystical thinker in Islam. His love poems, The Interpreter of Desires, include the famous lines in which the poet's heart becomes able to take every form. Compare the poetry of Rumi, his younger contemporary.
