About the author

Henry Gray (1827–1861) was a young anatomist and surgeon at St George's Hospital in London. With his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter, who drew the illustrations from their own dissections, he produced Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical in 1858, a clear and practical textbook for medical students.

Gray died of smallpox at thirty-four, caught while nursing his nephew, only three years after the book appeared. Revised many times, Gray's Anatomy is still in print more than a century and a half later, one of the most famous medical books ever written.
