About the author

Ibn Jubayr (1145–1217), born in Valencia, was secretary to the governor of Granada when, according to a well-known story, he was forced to drink wine and, in remorse, set out on the pilgrimage to Mecca. His journey, from 1183 to 1185, took him through Egypt under Saladin, the Hejaz, Iraq, Syria and Norman Sicily.

His Rihla, the travel diary he kept along the way, is one of the most vivid travel books in Arabic, full of the cities, sea storms, pilgrims and rulers he saw. He made two more journeys east and died in Alexandria. Compare it with The Travels of Marco Polo, written a century later.
