About the author

Abu al-Hasan al-Mawardi (974–1058) was born in Basra, became a judge and a leading scholar of the Shafi'i school of law, and served the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad as an envoy and adviser at a time when real power was held by others.

His Ordinances of Government is one of the first systematic works of Islamic political theory, describing the duties of the caliph, ministers, judges and governors. His Ethics of Religion and of This World, a book of practical wisdom on learning, friendship and conduct, is still read today.
