About the author
Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi (936–1013), known in Europe as Albucasis, was born in Madinat al-Zahra near Córdoba and served as physician at the Umayyad court. He spent his life practising medicine and teaching, and is considered the greatest surgeon of the medieval Islamic world.
His medical encyclopedia, al-Tasrif, ends with a book on surgery that describes operations step by step and illustrates some two hundred instruments, many of his own design. Translated into Latin in the twelfth century, it was used in European medical schools for five hundred years.
