About this book

Undine Spragg, beautiful, ruthless and endlessly dissatisfied, comes to New York from the Midwestern town of Apex with her newly rich parents, determined to rise to the top of society. She marries into an old, refined New York family, then sets her sights higher, moving through divorces and marriages in New York and Paris, always wanting whatever she does not yet have, and leaving her husbands and even her small son behind her.

Context and significance

Edith Wharton published the novel in 1913 after years of work, and many critics rank it with The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence as her greatest achievement. Undine, named after a hair-waving product her father once sold, is one of the most memorable anti-heroines in American fiction.
