About this book

Lily Bart is twenty-nine, beautiful, intelligent and without money in New York's richest society, where she must marry well before her looks fade. She is always close to a good match and always, at the last moment, spoils her chances, partly out of pride and partly because she cannot quite make herself sell her life. Her debts, a married man's loan and a jealous rival begin her slow slide down the social ladder.

Context and significance

Published in 1905, The House of Mirth was Edith Wharton's first great success; its title comes from the Book of Ecclesiastes, which says that the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. It is a moving and unsparing portrait of a woman with no place in a world that values only money. Worth reading alongside it: The Age of Innocence.
