About this book

Agnes Grey, the younger daughter of a poor clergyman, decides to help her family by becoming a governess. Her first post is with the Bloomfields, whose spoiled children torment animals and their teacher while their parents blame her for everything; her second is with the Murrays, whose vain elder daughter Rosalie collects admirers. Quiet and lonely, Agnes finds comfort in the kindness of the new curate, Mr Weston.

Context and significance

Anne Brontë (1820–1849), the youngest of the Brontë sisters, drew on her own unhappy years as a governess, and the novel was published in 1847, the same year as her sisters' Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Calm, honest and quietly ironic, it was long overshadowed by them. Read her bolder The Tenant of Wildfell Hall next.
