About this book

A stuffed velveteen rabbit is given to a little boy as a Christmas present, and is soon forgotten among the expensive mechanical toys, which look down on him. The wise old Skin Horse explains what it means to become Real: 'Real isn't how you are made. It's a thing that happens to you,' when a child loves you for a long, long time, even if your fur is loved off. The rabbit becomes the boy's favourite and goes everywhere with him, until the boy falls ill with scarlet fever.

Context and significance

Margery Williams (1881–1944) published the tale in 1922 with illustrations by William Nicholson, and it has become one of the best-loved children's stories about love and growing old. Compare Winnie-the-Pooh.
