About this book

Parson Yorick, the hero of Tristram Shandy, sets off for France on an impulse, because someone has told him 'they order this matter better in France'. Instead of describing cathedrals and monuments, he records the small encounters and feelings of the road: a monk at Calais whom he treats unkindly and then regrets, a pretty glover's wife in Paris, a caged starling crying 'I can't get out', a lost passport, and many moments of tenderness, comedy and gentle flirtation.

Context and significance

Laurence Sterne published the book in 1768, a few weeks before his death, and it made 'sentimental' a fashionable word all over Europe. It is a playful answer to the stiff travel books of its day, especially Tobias Smollett's, whom Sterne mocks as 'Smelfungus'.
