About this book

These are rhymed cautionary tales about children who misbehave, each with its own brightly coloured pictures. Shock-headed Peter will not cut his nails or comb his hair; cruel Frederick torments animals until a dog bites him; Harriet plays with matches and burns to ashes, leaving her cats to weep; three boys who mock a Black child are dipped in ink by Saint Nicholas; Conrad sucks his thumbs until the tailor cuts them off; Augustus refuses his soup and wastes away; and Fidgety Philip, Johnny Head-in-Air and Flying Robert meet their own ridiculous fates.

Context and significance

Heinrich Hoffmann (1809–1894), a doctor in Frankfurt, wrote and drew the book in 1844 as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, because he found the picture books in the shops too dull, and it was published the next year. Its exaggerated punishments are meant to make children laugh as much as to frighten them. For gentler classic tales, read Grimms' Fairy Tales.
