About this book

In 1831 a young French aristocrat, Alexis de Tocqueville, travelled through the United States for nine months, officially to study its prisons. He came home and wrote this book, which asks how a society built on equality works: its townships and juries, its newspapers and associations, its religion and its laws, and the danger he called the tyranny of the majority.

Context and significance

Tocqueville (1805–1859) believed that democracy was the future of Europe too, and wanted to understand its strengths and risks before it arrived. Published in 1835, the first volume is still quoted by politicians and scholars of every persuasion. It pairs naturally with Mill's On Liberty, which Tocqueville influenced.
