About this book

This volume contains five comedies by Plautus: Amphitryon, in which Jupiter disguises himself as a general in order to seduce his wife while Mercury impersonates the general's slave; The Comedy of Asses; The Pot of Gold, about a miser who hides his treasure; The Two Bacchises, with twin courtesans; and The Captives, about a slave who changes places with his master. Clever slaves, stern fathers, foolish sons and boastful soldiers fill the stage.

Context and significance

Titus Maccius Plautus (about 254–184 BC), the most popular comic playwright of ancient Rome, adapted Greek comedies for Roman audiences, and his plays inspired Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors and Molière's The Miser. This is the first volume of Paul Nixon's translation, with the Latin text.
