Norah accepts her fate, but the spirited Magdalen, a gifted actress, sets out to win the money back by disguise and deception.

Contexto e importância

Wilkie Collins published the novel in 1862, between The Woman in White and The Moonstone, as an attack on the law's treatment of children born outside marriage. Captain Wragge, the cheerful swindler who helps Magdalen, is one of his best comic creations.
