About this book

Julio Desnoyers, the handsome, idle son of a rich Franco-Argentine family, lives a life of tango and love affairs in Paris with no interest in politics, while his German cousins are proud officers of the Kaiser. Then in August 1914 war breaks out, and the German armies sweep over the family's château on the Marne. A mysterious Russian philosopher, Tchernoff, sees in the war the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, conquest, war, plague and death, riding over Europe, and the family is torn apart as its members fight on opposite sides.

Context and significance

Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867–1928), a Spanish novelist and republican politician, published the novel in 1916, and in this English translation by Charlotte Brewster Jordan it became the best-selling novel in the United States in 1919. The 1921 film made Rudolph Valentino a star. Compare All Quiet on the Western Front.
