About this book

In the village of Grand-Pré in Acadia, today's Nova Scotia, Evangeline Bellefontaine is betrothed to Gabriel Lajeunesse when, in 1755, the British expel the French-speaking Acadians from their homeland, burn their villages and scatter them along the coast of America. Separated on the shore, the lovers are carried to different places, and Evangeline spends her life searching for Gabriel across the continent, from the bayous of Louisiana to the prairies, until she becomes a nurse among the poor of Philadelphia.

Context and significance

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published the poem in 1847, in unrhymed hexameters beginning 'This is the forest primeval', and it made the expulsion of the Acadians known around the world. Read Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha.
