Years after Three Men in a Boat, J., George and Harris, now middle-aged and two of them married, escape their families for a cycling tour through the Black Forest in Germany. Harris's tandem goes wrong, they get lost, they struggle with German grammar and German regulations and climb mountains they have no need to climb, and the narrator makes sharp, affectionate observations on the orderly German character.
