About this book

Henry Esmond, an orphan believed to be the illegitimate son of a nobleman, grows up as a page in the household of his kinsman Lord Castlewood in the reign of William III, devoted to the gentle Lady Castlewood and later in love with her proud, dazzling daughter Beatrix. Through the wars in Flanders under the Duke of Marlborough, duels and Jacobite plots to bring the exiled Stuart prince to the throne, Esmond tells his story in the elaborate style of the early eighteenth century.

Context and significance

William Makepeace Thackeray published the novel in 1852 and thought it the best he could do; it is a remarkable imitation of the prose of Queen Anne's age, with appearances by Addison, Steele and Swift. Read Thackeray's Vanity Fair.
