About this book

Strepsiades, an old farmer ruined by his son's passion for horse racing, decides to send the young man to the 'Thinkery' of Socrates, where students are said to learn how to win any argument, right or wrong, and so escape their debts. When his son refuses, he goes himself, and finds Socrates suspended in a basket in the air, worshipping the Clouds. The comedy ends with the son beating his father and justifying it by the new logic, and the father setting fire to the school.

Context and significance

Aristophanes staged the comedy in 423 BC, and its mocking portrait of Socrates as a sophist was recalled by Socrates himself at his trial, in Plato's Apology. This translation is by W. J. Hickie. Read Aristophanes's The Frogs.
