About this book

A Genoese sea captain, returning from a voyage round the world, tells a Knight Hospitaller about an ideal city he found on an island near the equator. Built on a hill within seven circles of walls painted with all the knowledge of the world, the City of the Sun is ruled by a priest-king called Sun, or Metaphysician, with three ministers, Power, Wisdom and Love. Its citizens hold all things in common, work only four hours a day, and are educated by walking among the pictures on their walls.

Context and significance

Tommaso Campanella (1568–1639), a Dominican friar and philosopher, wrote the book around 1602 while imprisoned in Naples for leading a conspiracy against Spanish rule; he spent twenty-seven years in prison. It is one of the classic utopias of the Renaissance. Compare More's Utopia and Bacon's New Atlantis.
