About this book

In Rome under Nero, around AD 64, a young patrician officer, Marcus Vinicius, falls passionately in love with Lygia, a barbarian king's daughter brought up as a hostage, who is secretly a Christian and is protected by her giant servant Ursus. Vinicius's uncle, the elegant and witty Petronius, Nero's 'arbiter of taste', helps him pursue her, and through her Vinicius meets the apostles Peter and Paul. Then Rome burns, Nero blames the Christians, and the persecution begins, with its horrors in the arena.

Context and significance

Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846–1916), who won the Nobel Prize in 1905, published the novel in 1895 and 1896, and it became one of the best-selling books in the world; its title, 'Where are you going?', comes from the legend of Peter meeting Christ on the road out of Rome. This translation is by Jeremiah Curtin. The emperors of its world are portrayed in Suetonius's Lives of the Twelve Caesars, and its spirit is close to Ben-Hur.
