About this book

The Reverend Josiah Crawley, the proud, learned and desperately poor curate of Hogglestock, is accused of stealing a cheque for twenty pounds and cannot explain how he came by it. While the scandal divides the county and the bishop's domineering wife, Mrs Proudie, pursues him, his daughter Grace refuses to marry the man she loves, Major Grantly, until her father's name is cleared. Around them, Trollope brings the stories of Barsetshire's clergy and families to a close.

Context and significance

Published in 1867, the last of the six Barsetshire novels, The Last Chronicle of Barset was the one Trollope himself thought his best, and it includes the death of Mrs Proudie and of the gentle Mr Harding, the hero of The Warden. Read Doctor Thorne.
