About this book

William Guest, a socialist in Victorian London, goes to bed after a heated political meeting and wakes up in a distant future, in an England transformed by revolution. Money, prisons, Parliament and great industrial cities have disappeared; London's factories have given way to gardens and villages, people work only at what they enjoy, things are made with craft and beauty, and men and women live as equals. He travels up the Thames with new friends to a haymaking festival, wondering whether he will be allowed to stay.

Context and significance

William Morris (1834–1896), the designer, poet and socialist, published the book in 1890 as a reply to Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward, whose machine-run, centralised utopia he disliked. It is one of the most beautiful of all utopias, and the journey ends at Kelmscott Manor, Morris's own country house. Compare Thomas More's Utopia.
