About this book

John Tanner, a wealthy revolutionary thinker who has written a 'Revolutionist's Handbook', finds himself made guardian of Ann Whitefield, a charming, determined young woman who has decided to marry him, though he is the last to realise it. When he does, he flees across Europe in a motor car with his chauffeur, and in the Spanish mountains he is captured by brigands; in the famous third-act dream, 'Don Juan in Hell', he becomes Don Juan, debating the Devil about the purpose of life.

Context and significance

Bernard Shaw wrote the play in 1903 as his own version of the Don Juan legend turned upside down: here the woman is the pursuer, driven by what Shaw called the Life Force. It is full of brilliant arguments, and the dream scene is often performed on its own. Read also Arms and the Man and Pygmalion.
