About this book

Rilla Blythe, Anne's youngest daughter, is a pretty, rather vain fifteen-year-old who wants nothing but fun and parties when the First World War breaks out. As her brothers go off one after another to fight in France, Rilla grows up: she takes in a war baby whose mother has died, organises a Junior Red Cross, waits for letters and casualty lists and learns courage, while Susan, the family's devoted housekeeper, follows every battle on the map.

Context and significance

L. M. Montgomery published the novel in 1921, and it is one of the few novels of the First World War written from the home front by a Canadian woman who lived through it. Read Anne of Green Gables and Anne of the Island.
