About this book

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister on a farm called Green Gables in Prince Edward Island, ask an orphanage for a boy to help with the work, and by mistake receive Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old girl with red hair, a vast imagination and a flood of talk. Marilla means to send her back, but Anne stays, and in the village of Avonlea she gets into one scrape after another: she breaks a slate over the head of Gilbert Blythe for calling her 'Carrots', makes her best friend Diana tipsy on what she thinks is raspberry cordial, and dyes her hair green, while slowly winning the hearts of everyone around her.

Context and significance

L. M. Montgomery wrote the novel around 1905, set it aside in a hatbox after publishers turned it down, and saw it published in 1908; it became a worldwide success, and Mark Twain is said to have called Anne the dearest child in fiction since Alice. Prince Edward Island still welcomes visitors who come because of her. Her story continues in Anne of Avonlea.
