About this book

The Duke of Saint-Simon spent his life at the court of Louis XIV at Versailles and wrote down everything he saw: the endless ceremony that governed the king's day from his rising to his going to bed, the rivalries of princes and dukes over the smallest points of rank, the influence of Madame de Maintenon, the wars and the misery of the country in the king's last years, the deaths of the king's heirs, the death of Louis XIV himself in 1715 and the Regency of the Duke of Orléans that followed.

Context and significance

Saint-Simon (1675–1755) wrote the memoirs in his later years from his notes, and they were published in full only in the nineteenth century; with their sharp portraits and passionate prejudices, they are one of the great works of French prose. For fiction set at an earlier French court, read The Princess of Cleves.
