About this book

Madame Campan entered the service of the French royal family as a young reader to the daughters of Louis XV and became the first lady of the bedchamber to Queen Marie Antoinette. In these memoirs she describes life inside Versailles: the queen's arrival from Austria as a girl of fourteen, the rigid etiquette she struggled against, her friendships, her children, the scandal of the diamond necklace, and then the Revolution, the attack on the Tuileries in 1792 and the end of the monarchy.

Context and significance

Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Campan (1752–1822) survived the Revolution, opened a school for girls, and was later appointed by Napoleon to direct a school for the daughters of members of the Legion of Honour. Her memoirs, published in 1823, are a sympathetic first-hand portrait of the queen. Compare the court of the previous century in Saint-Simon's memoirs, and the Revolution in A Tale of Two Cities.
