About this book

A rich American, never named, sets out at fifty-eight with his wife and daughter on a luxurious voyage to the Old World, having worked all his life and decided it is time to enjoy himself. On the great liner Atlantis and in the hotels of Naples and Capri everything is arranged for his comfort, until one evening, dressing for dinner in Capri, he suddenly collapses, and the hotel that served him so eagerly hurries to hide him away. This volume adds other stories by Ivan Bunin.

Context and significance

Bunin (1870–1953), who left Russia after the Revolution, became in 1933 the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. This 1922 translation is by S. S. Koteliansky together with D. H. Lawrence and Leonard Woolf, and it was published by the Hogarth Press of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Compare Tolstoy's Master and Man.
