About this book

The Reverend James Morell, a popular, energetic Christian socialist clergyman in London, is sure of everything, above all of his wife Candida's love. Then Eugene Marchbanks, a young, shy, aristocratic poet whom the couple have befriended, declares that he loves Candida and that Morell does not deserve her. The two men demand that she choose between them, and Candida's choice, and her reason for it, turn the play's ideas about strength and weakness upside down.

Context and significance

Bernard Shaw wrote the comedy in 1894, and it became one of his most often performed plays. Read Arms and the Man and Man and Superman.
