About this book

In a quiet Dutch valley on the Hudson River, the lanky, superstitious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane courts Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a rich farmer, and competes with the local hero Brom Bones for her hand. Riding home alone after a harvest party where the guests have told tales of the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a soldier who lost his head to a cannonball, Ichabod hears hoofbeats behind him on the dark road.

Context and significance

The tale appeared in 1820 in The Sketch Book, which also contains 'Rip Van Winkle', and made Washington Irving (1783–1859) the first American writer famous in Europe. Readers of Arabic may enjoy knowing that he later lived in the Alhambra palace in Granada and wrote Tales of the Alhambra, a loving book of Andalusian legends.
