About this book

At sixteen and a half, Anne Shirley takes up her first job as teacher of the school in Avonlea, the village on Prince Edward Island where she grew up, full of resolutions never to whip a pupil. Meanwhile Marilla takes in a pair of orphaned twins, angelic Dora and mischievous Davy; Anne and her friends found a society to improve the village, with disastrous results when the hall is painted bright blue; and Anne befriends a lonely, romantic woman, Miss Lavendar, in her little stone house.

Context and significance

L. M. Montgomery (1874–1942) published this sequel to Anne of Green Gables in 1909, a year after the first book's huge success. It is gentle, funny and full of the island's beauty, and the story continues in Anne of the Island. For more in the same vein, read Montgomery's novel for adults, The Blue Castle.
