About this book

When her father, a country clergyman, leaves the Church over a matter of conscience, Margaret Hale must leave her beloved village in the green south of England for Milton, a smoky cotton-manufacturing town in the north. There she clashes with the proud mill owner John Thornton, befriends a union leader's dying daughter, and finds herself in the middle of a strike that tests everyone's ideas about masters and workers.

Context and significance

Elizabeth Gaskell published North and South in Dickens's magazine in 1854 and 1855, and it is both a love story in the tradition of Pride and Prejudice and a serious novel about industrial England. Gaskell, a minister's wife who lived in Manchester, knew the subject well. Her gentler Cranford is also in the library.
