This single volume gathers everything Shakespeare is known to have written: all the comedies, histories and tragedies, from The Comedy of Errors to The Tempest, including Pericles and The Two Noble Kinsmen, which were left out of the First Folio, together with the 154 Sonnets and the narrative poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. In one place the reader can follow a phrase, a character type or an idea across the whole of his career, from the farces and chronicle plays of his twenties to the great tragedies and the late romances.
Context and significance
William Shakespeare (1564–1616), an actor and shareholder in the Globe Theatre, wrote for a popular stage, and his works have been translated into every major language, including Arabic, where Khalil Mutran's versions of Othello and Hamlet were landmarks. This collection is in modern spelling. The library also has each play on its own, such as Hamlet, and the Sonnets.
