About this book

Ralph, the youngest of four princes of the small kingdom of Upmeads, sets out in search of adventure and hears of the Well at the World's End, whose water gives long life and good fortune to those who drink it. His long quest leads him through strange cities, forests and wastelands, into love with a mysterious lady who has already drunk from the well, and finally, with the brave Ursula, to the well itself beyond the mountains, and home again to defend his own land.

Context and significance

William Morris published this long romance in 1896, the year of his death, in a deliberately archaic English, and it greatly influenced Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Read Morris's News from Nowhere.
