Strange things are happening at the Paris Opera: stagehands see a man in evening dress with a skull for a face, a box is reserved for a ghost who demands his salary, and a great chandelier crashes into the audience. Meanwhile the young singer Christine Daaé is being taught by a mysterious voice she believes to be an angel of music, until her childhood friend Raoul follows her into the cellars and the lake beneath the building.
Gaston Leroux (1868–1927) was a court reporter and theatre critic before he turned to fiction, and he made his name with the locked-room mystery The Mystery of the Yellow Room. Published in 1910, The Phantom of the Opera was not a great success at first, but the 1925 silent film and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical made its masked figure one of the most famous in the world.
