Über den Autor

James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879) was born in Edinburgh and published his first scientific paper at fourteen. He explained the rings of Saturn, produced the first colour photograph and helped found the theory of gases, but his greatest achievement was a set of equations uniting electricity, magnetism and light.

He predicted that light is an electromagnetic wave, opening the way to radio and the physics of the twentieth century; Einstein kept his portrait on his study wall. He became the first director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge and died at forty-eight.
